Bhu : The problem of hearing in children can occur at any age, but children who are unable to hear since childhood will never be able to speak. And such children who have deafness since birth, about 50 percent of them can be treated. But it is best if this treatment is done as early as possible. Screening is necessary for early diagnosis and treatment. Early new born hearing screening programme is being run in the room no. 22 of department of ENT Sir Sunderlal Hospital, BHU under principal investigator Dr. Vishwambhar Singh. This programme is directed for early detection of hearing status in new born in Varanasi and neighbouring districts.
He requested the masses to bring their new born children on every Monday and Tuesday, 11:00 AM to 1:00 PM on the above mentioned place. One can bring the children at the time routine immunization visits, if they have not attended the same due to some reason. If got tested before the age of three months, then the operation is done by the age of six months, then such children who cannot hear, can live life like us after the cochlear implant surgery. From this point of view, Dr. Vishwambhar Singh of Banaras Hindu University along with Dr. Rajesh Kumar (Prof. & Head of department) has started this important project in his department. This work is being done under the Institute of Eminence project. This is the first work of its kind to be done in any medical college of Uttar Pradesh. This test enables us to detect hearing loss within 72 hours of birth. Senior residents, junior residents, audiologists, Prof. R. N. Chaurasia from department of Neurology along with the departmental faculty were present in the inaugural function.
