Penguins Rangers fate Pens find new way to same destination
As the books near on the first round series between the Penguins and Rangers. it’s the Pens who are left behind to deal with a long summer and wondering what could have been.
Jake Guenzel added it up enough well when he said, “ it just did not go our way”. Simple, but true. On the face, squandering a 3 games to 1 series lead can be confusing and rankling. The other perspective (and presumably closer to the real story) is that Pittsburgh going up 3-1 while using a third string goalie against the Vezina winner was remarkable but shaky.
No lead was safe as the series ticked on and the Pens could n’t relatively find that fourth palm. While the last three games stand out in a comeback series, every game matters. Game 2, for case, was just as poignant as any contest, and one that conceivably could have gone a different way if Igor Shesterkin was n’t excellent and Pittsburgh got better goaltending. The same could be said Game 7 where the Rangers scored two pretensions just seconds after Shesterkin turned down quality scoring chances.
But this was n’t a classic Pens series where they got “ goalie ’d” and had to beam and bear with a Jaroslav Halak or Carey Price or Ilya Sorokin standing on his head and keeping them at bay. The Pens scored 25 pretensions in seven games on Shesterkin, which is both emotional and confounding at the same time. How could they do so well but still lose?
Clearly injuries played a part in that, with Jarry out until courageously coming back for Game 7. Brian Dumoulin missing the last six games did n’t help the platoon try and isolate their goaltending situation made worse when Casey De Smith’s core gave out. A series turning point was clearly when Sidney Crosby got hit up high and knocked out for a game and ahalf. However, maybe the series plays out with a different result, If any of the over go slightly different.
At the end of the day, still, in the NHL playoffs it generally boils down to goaltending. Pittsburgh’s downfall was a predictable result — and maybe ineluctable — when dealing with the gift differences on both ends of theice. Jarry’s Game 7 is presumably too enduring for GSAA — which does n’t know that Mike Matheson was pulling his stylish Jack Johnson print and diverting a thing from outdoors into his own net. Jarry battled and presumably played when he should n’t have in Game 7, and was worse for wear after it.
Jarry sluggishly limped out after his media vacuity. He’d given his all, earned some respect and gratefulness for indeed trying to play and leaving it all out on the ice, indeed if he still came up suddenly. Had Pittsburgh did win Game 7, with a halted goalie and other issues, who knows how important they would have had to stand up against the division champion Carolina Hurricanes in the alternate round anyway. Eventually the beat up platoon doodle out beforehand. It was n’t for a lack of trouble or amenability to lay it on the line. But like Guentzel said it just did n’t go their way.
